Did you know that a granny unit costs the same as one to two years in a nursing home? Our Home Care Cottages offer a flexible, expedient, and cost-effective solution.

When Little House on the Trailer was just getting started, Stephen identified a legal way to build and occupy a little house in Sonoma County without a building permit. The opportunity lay in a special use permit that allows occupation of RVs and recreational trailers for those who need to give or receive care. Since his beautiful little houses are built on wheels, they are legally classified as recreational trailers, savings the buyer tens of thousands of dollars and speeding the permitting process exponentially. It was during this time that the Home Care Cottage was born.

Home Care Cottages are more than an assisted living option – they also offers a creative and sustainable solution to the housing crisis in California. It would take the average young person in San Francisco 40 years to save enough for a down payment, while roughly 80% of baby boomers own homes. Many baby boomers are in need of care, especially in the current health crisis. With the Home Care Cottage, the senior generation can move out of their home to a custom cottage in the backyard while their children and grandchildren occupy the main house. This situation provides more autonomy than all three generations in the same house, while still making sure grandma has support when she needs it.

Especially with the tragic number of nursing home deaths during COVID-19, we’re trying to get the word about this creative solution. Know a family who could benefit? Forward this blog post or share our contact info with them. We’d be more than happy to help!
